Air Quality Egg device prototype

With the availability of low cost electronic sensors it is relatively easy to construct a connected (IoT) DIY environmental sensor, that can be used for measuring urban pollution with high level of accuracy. We constructed a prototype of this device for pollution measurements on Koroška street in the city of Maribor. Project is ongoing as device prototype needs further development and refinement.

Test Measurements of AQE Alpha version device
In the framework of second Urban Hackathon (UH-2) and as a part of Environmental activities co-financed by the municipality a pilot project was executed under the moniker of Air Pollution Egg (APE) by the Maribor Cycling Network and the Citilab Institute. By using modular component sensors (Arduino AQE sensor shield) and special optical dust sensor a device was conceived with the ability to measure environmental parameters inside the <15% variation when tested next to the official dislocated measuring station (Titova cesta, Maribor).

Mobilna naprava za merjenje kvalitete zraka

V okviru projekta AQE smo pridobili dve prototipni platformi (sensor shield) za izdelavo DIY naprave za meritve onesnaženosti zraka in sicer CO/NO, temp./vlage, ter dodali senzor za optično meritev delcev (Sharp Dust Sensor GP2Y1010AU0F). Naprava je izdelana do stopnje delujočega prototipa in bi jo bilo potrebno izboljšati in dodati spletno komponento, ki bi omogočala spremljanje meritev v živo.

Končano napravo je mogoče namestiti na kritične točke v mestu ter enostavno preveriti okoljske parametre.

Rough conclusion

The measurements show small deviation from typical street measurement. No excess pollution was measured in traffic peak times around 8AM and 5PM (i.e. dust and NO2). At the time of the ETM two building sites were active on the Koroška Street, that had a negative impact on the dust pollution measurements. At the time of the measurements no excess pollution was detected. Subsequent measurements, that are taking place now, show breaches of allowed levels in NO2 and dust pollution.

In the framework of APE project measurements on the Koroška Street will continue. All the data will be published on the web (koroskacesta.si  /  www.city-toolbox.net) for future references and access.
